Have you ever heard about Maca?

Maca is a tuber. If it has been found for twenty years, and consumed by the Peruvian Andes for millennias.

The Incas already praised the energizing and medicinal properties of this food considered a natural aphrodisiac.

It is one of the few edible plants able to grow at an altitude as high as that of the Andean highlands. It grows between 3,800 and 4,500 meters above sea level.

What are its effects on our body? Why is it interesting for us to eat it?

Simply because it is:

Energizing: improves sports performance

Maca boosts our energy and gives us tone because it is a concentrate of proteins, vitamins, and minerals.

It improves sports performance thanks to its high content of amino acids. It makes it possible to extend the duration of the effort by reducing fatigue, and reduces muscle pain and recovery time.

This study from Northumbria University in Newcastle has shown that the consumption of maca has improved the athletic performance of cyclists, traveling 40km faster and easier.

Boosts libido
Maca contains two active ingredients, macaenes and macamides, found only in this plant and which play a key role in increasing sexual energy.

It increases sexual desire in men and women. More specifically, it increases erectile function in men and helps fight impotence.

The Andean people have observed that maca makes it easier for animals to reproduce and have healthier litters. This led them to consume it for these same purposes and thus fight against infertility problems.

It increases the volume, quality and motility of sperm for men and helps raise the level of the luteinizing hormone, which stimulates ovulation. It also helps regulate cycles, which also helps to have less painful periods for women. Relieves symptoms of menopause
Maca does not contain hormones but nutrients that regulate our hormonal balance.

It relieves hot flashes, insomnia and irritability. It naturally helps to make this transition healthier and more comfortable for women.

Boosts concentration and memory
Thanks to the phosphorus it contains, it allows us to develop memory and better processing of information by our brain. It is also an ally for learning.

Maca also allows for better concentration.

Anti-cancer
Thanks to the glucosinolates, powerful antioxidants which it contains, the maca would prevent the appearance of cancers. Many studies associate them with the prevention of lung and colorectal cancer.

Helps to decrease the size of the prostate
Maca improves prostate health by fighting hyperplasia.

Improves our physical appearance from the inside out.
Maca is traditionally used in hair treatment to stimulate the growth and strength of hair for men and women.

It is an effective natural treatment against hair loss.

Maca improves the appearance of the skin, its complexion and facilitates its hydration.

It makes the skin less sensitive to temperature variations, and also helps treat hormonal acne.

Okay so now you will tell me, but how to consume it? In my opinion the best way to consume it is ito by the power. You can put it on a yogurt (the mix is very good), in a smoothie,  or in a salad sauce. Do not cook it, the effects will drop out easy. If you are not into the taste of maca, I suggest you to take pills and follow the instructions of the product. However, never forget the pills are transformed product. Thus, you cannot really know if this pills will be efficient or not.

To conclude this article I give a simple image to keep in mind this beautiful ingredient:

We found negative effects on the maca for pregnant women having spots on their arms. Physicians are still working on it to know why and how this happened. Nevertheless, it is preferable to consume it organic, with a recognized certification. Be careful and never consume to much of anything.
